Paua’s music is a distinct blend of all the sweet elements of reggae, soul & funk. Within the band lies a powerful collaboration of varying musical influences, producing an earthy original sound unique to Paua. High energy, feel-good live shows instantly captivate audiences from the first drum kick. A vibrant blend of creativity, pure musicianship and originality.

Formed in 2009, Paua had simple humble goals; to write and create original reggae music, perform shows and work towards releasing music they not only love, but that has made a difference to the masses that love that bona fide divergent sound of Paua Reggae Music.

Now, with two full length album releases, an EP and multiple single releases, topping iTunes reggae charts in Australia and New Zealand, Paua are globalising their musical journey. They have been blessed to share the stage with reggae giants such as UB40, Steel Pulse, Julian Marley, Ky-Mani Marley, Black Slate, Raging Fyah, Tarrus Riley, Third World, Maxi Priest and Katchafire, having played at some of the biggest roots/reggae festivals in the Southern Hemisphere including multiple sold out One Love Festivals (NZ). Paua is continuing to set bigger goals moving forward, including extensive international touring and creating new music; music which encompasses all of Paua’s unique signature elements which cater for the mind, body, heart & soul, something for everyone.

“It’s always amazing to hear how our music has touched people from all over the world, especially my home land of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Hearing crowds sing our songs word for word at our shows is, and will always be a very humbling experience.”

– Jay Thomas

Paua is a family. A 7 piece band coming from extremely diverse musical & cultural backgrounds. From New Zealand Maori, homegrown Australians to the Phillipines, Paua truly is an eclectic melting pot. Cassie Whitehead, saxophonist queen of Paua and the only female essence in the band, says “the band is truly able to draw on each other’s strengths and contribute ideas that may seem foreign to the reggae genre”. During creative sessions, songs evolve with each member’s individual flavour, resulting in some amazing compositions and arrangements. Songs often go in interesting directions which again simply adds to the unique musical magic Paua creates.

Founder and frontman Jay Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the band with his exceptional song writing abilities and impeccable vocal style, he believes that although most songs are inspired by a story, an experience or even the surrounding environment , some are a spontaneous and natural expression.. This was the case with Paua’s massive hit Coming Home. “The words kind of wrote themselves and I never imagined the impact it would have on people in the years to come.”
